Today we started solids! Owen has been showing all the signs to go ahead and start them, but we kept wanting to wait closer to when he’d turn 6 months, but no sooner than 5 months. He has been making sort of chewing motions with his mouth, he holds his head up pretty good, he hasn’t seemed full after breast/bottle feedings, he has shown a huge interest in food and drinks, and he’s lost his extrusion reflex. The day I realized he was ready (besides all the other signs) was when he spittled a bit and sucked it back in. That sounds way gross, but it was mainly spit and I was just so surprised that he didn’t let it fall out like he normally did.

SO! Today we started with baby oatmeal.

He was excited, to say the least lol

The box said for baby’s first solid food feeding to use 1 tablespoon of oatmeal and 4-5 tablespoons of breastmilk or formula. I only used 4 tablespoons. It wasn’t too thick, but it was thick enough for Owen to realize a difference between that and breastmilk and formula.

It gets better, don’t worry lol. Pretty soon he was swallowing the stuff (about half that I tried to feed him) and acted like an old pro. 🙂

He even tried to “help”.

“So this is the stuff that Daddy eats every morning!”

Then he started to get fussy and it was obviously time to quit. Maybe half of the oatmeal was left in the bowl, and he probably ate around half of that amount (a quarter of the full amount made). I’m excited to try new foods with him in the future!

In other news, yesterday was Dan’s birthday! Happy birthday Dan!!! (Did you really think I’d leave that out of my blog??)

Ok, also in other news, we tried giving Owen a sippy cup with water a few times now. He has taken water from my cups before and has seemed to like it, but he doesn’t seem to like it from a sippy cup yet. He sips the water up but once he realizes its water then he loses interest. He likes chewing on the cup and handles more than he likes drinking the water!

And, tonight the three of us went to Willamette Park and sat by the river, talking and watching everyone in their boats. I can’t wait to get out on the water, and I can’t wait to take Owen out! 🙂

I LOVE that pic! They both look so happy! 🙂
